The Five Cakras in the Gaṇapatitattva
Mūlādhāra, located at the base of the body (between the genitals), is the dwelling place of Brahmā. It is described as “square-shaped and reddish in color,” with “an eight-petaled lotus… a jewel, and inside the jewel, Omkāra” This cakra is the root of vāyu, the life-breath that animates existence.
Nābhi, at the navel, is the seat of Viṣṇu, preserver of the universe. His cakra is “flower-shaped with ten petals… like a newly risen sun,” and within it is the amṛta—the nectar of immortality. It supports the body’s digestive fire and symbolizes maintenance and continuity.
Hati, at the chest, belongs to Rudra. The cakra is “a 31-petaled lotus… covered in fire,” inside which lie the sun, the moon, and a diamond-shaped light. Within this is prāṇavāyu and at the very center, the prāṇaliṅga, the subtle emblem of life-force. This center is linked with the waking state and with vision.
Kaṇṭha, at the throat, is governed by Īśvara, residing in a white lotus with ten petals. Inside is “something like a diamond.” This cakra governs sleep (turu), speech, and the element of air.
Jihvāgra, at the tip of the tongue, is the highest in this system, surpassing even the crown in significance. It is the home of Sadāśiva, who guards all consciousness. The cakra is described as “a bud-shaped lotus with five colors,” containing bindusāra (a ruby-like jewel), within which is a pure crystal (śuddhasphaṭika). Deep within that crystal lies śūnyanirvāṇa, the realm of supreme emptiness—ultimate liberation.

Beyond the Offerings: The Sacred Language of Balinese Rituals
In this talk, we’ll explore how the Balinese use offerings, mantras, and embodied prayer to harmonize the physical and the spiritual, the ancestral and the divine. We'll see how rituals carry both existential responsibility and the soul's deep yearning for union, revealing a worldview where every gesture is charged with meaning.
